When someone hears electric bicycle and thinks of electric bicycle, the first image they imagine may be an electric bike or scooter but they actually look pretty different. Imagine a traditional bicycle. Then add several electrical components , like an electric motor, battery, and controller to boost its power. These are the basic components of all electric bikes available.
How electric bikes work
Electric Bike Electric Scooter pedal and steer the bike just like the normal bicycle. In general, electric bicycles will utilize the same components. The electric bike is intended to enhance human power, not completely substitute it. It makes the rigors of hills and headwind more manageable and allows you to travel farther without becoming exhausted.
The best electric bike to choose from
The comfort and the quality of components is just essential on an electric bicycle as they would be on a regular bicycle. There are other aspects to consider.
The motor
There are numerous power ratings for electric bicycle motors, ranging from 200W to 1000W. The legal limit in the US is 750W. However, states may determine their own limits.
This is the same as horsepower. More ratings mean that the bike is able to carry more weight, however it will require more battery power. Consequently, a 750W motor will drain the battery quicker than a 250W one, but it will be more efficient.
A different aspect needs to be considered, however. The shape and position of the motor plays significant roles in how electric bikes operate.
Hub motors are the most commonly used type for E-Bike. It is generally connected to the front or rear wheel. When activated it pulls or pushes the wheel to move it along. Although this system works well but it has a major disadvantage. It isn't connected to the bicycle's wheels. Therefore, it's less effective when you're driving through hills or other terrain. Imagine driving a vehicle in only one gear for the whole day. You'll still be able to reach your destination, but you'll not have the same speed or torque from it like if you had a full range of gears.
At Activitybikes, we offer a patented mid-drive motor, that is integrated with the crank and gears. This has many advantages:
Increased performance while spending less battery power, because mid-drive motors use the bike's existing gears;
It is possible to change gears based on how steep the climb is. This will give you more hill climbing capability.
The motor is closer to the ground, and the handling is better.
The battery
The battery's choice will have an impact on the bike's weight, style, range, and weight. The performance of electric bikes is significantly dependent on the battery. The majority of batteries in the marketplace fall into one of these two categories:
Sealed Lead Acid (SLA)
These batteries were previously the primary type of battery used in most electric scooters and electric bicycles. Today, the majority of electric scooters are still powered by SLA batteries, whereas electric bicycles (which frequently require human input) have opted for more advanced battery technology in order to keep the bike as lightweight as is possible.
Lithium (Ion/Polymer/Manganese/Etc.)
They are the most advanced technology for batteries. A lithium battery has the potential to last for about three times longer than an SLA battery. Lithium batteries are smaller and, in general, maintenance-free.
The controller
It is available in a variety of styles, the controller lets you control the electric assistance of the electric bike. It's an important part in how electric bikes operate. For convenience, the controller is located on the handlebar. There are two main styles of controllers: pedal-activated and throttle-based controllers.
Pedal-activated systems offer electric assistance as you push down on the pedals. There is no need to turn on the throttle, just pedal to go. Electric bikes equipped with pedal-activated systems come with a controller attached to the handlebar that lets you adjust the level of assistance you receive while you pedal. You can set the amount of assistance that you need from very low to extremely high.
Throttle-based controllers work with simple throttle mechanisms. The throttle can be one with a twist grip or thumb-press type. For electric assistance, you need to pull back the throttle, or press it. Some electric bikes require just opening the throttle, which allows you to ride without pedaling.
Electric bikes are simple to ride, use and maintain. They require very little maintenance when compared to traditional Mountain Bike bicycles.
